I know it would be great if the Methodist Conference authorised our desire to bless same-sex couples. But my impression is that this isn`t going to happen this year, more from a sense of inertia that homophobia.
So how about taking a leaf out of Dr Martin Dudley`s book and doing it anyway? If a rather trad Anglo-Catholic in the heart of City of London can do it, what the hell is stopping the rest of us!?
I do wonder whether this is what actually happened with the remarriage of divorcees - some people/churches went ahead and did it and the situation eventually had to be regularised. Are there churches out there (I know there are certainly ministers) willing to go ahead and do it and risk the consequences? There has been plenty of talk about the leading part lay people play in Methodism - now it`s time for some of them to make a stand and get their Church Councils to do justice.
(And let`s face it - what are the consequences really going to be? Can you see District Chairs disciplining local Churches?)
