Songs of Protest and Praise

I recently came across a song book called `Gentle Angry People - Songs of Protest and Praise`, compiled by the Alliance of Radical Methodists in 1987.

There are some weird and wonderful songs in it, some of which have dated more than others. But it was a phrase in the preface that stood out..

"Are we a progressive people still born in song?"

I wondered what our response might be to that today?

Any thoughts?

Come sing a love song, come sing the blues,
Bring your cross and your dancing shoes,
If you`re undecided now`s the time to choose,
Between the glossy papers and our own good news.

The Rising Street Blues went down well in a couple of churches recently even though I sang the chorus - at least one hymn that can still be sung.

Rising Street is in Burngreave Sheffield.

David Mowat, the author and composer is living in Bristol and still a musician.

Well I never - this wonderful collection came to mind only the other day when I found myself listening to "The world turned upside down" by Dick Gaughan. I must dig my copy out - which of the songs should be put forward for the new Methodist collection of hymns and songs? I recall that "SofPandP" was compiled because "Hymns and Psalms" left out some lovely old songs of protest and praise that ARM didn`t want Methodism to lose.
